Start your free store- What is the difference between margin and markup?
- Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is profit as a percentage of cost. Selling at ₹150 what costs ₹100 is a 33.3% margin but a 50% markup. Pricing decisions usually use markup; financial health is usually measured in margin.
- What is a good profit margin for an online store?
- It varies by category: groceries often run 5–15%, fashion 40–60%, handmade and D2C brands 50–70%. After ads, shipping, and payment fees, many healthy D2C stores net 10–20%. Knowing your gross margin per product is step one.
- Should I include payment gateway fees in cost?
- Yes — gateway fees (typically ~2% in India) plus shipping and packaging are part of your real cost per order. Add them to the cost field for a true margin. (On Sellerlane, the platform itself adds 0% transaction fees.)
